Understanding colour therapy and the role it plays in our lives.
Your choice of colour in clothing often dictates your mood. In reverse, your mood also dictates your choice of colour in what you wear. Sometimes we send the wrong emotions without even knowing, because of what we choose to wear. Human beings are visual beings; it is thus hard for us to ignore colours.
The colours we choose for our outfits are always sending waves of emotions through us even when we don`t know it. Even if you suck at fashion (the type who wears the first thing they find in their closet) it`s important to know that what you wear affects the energy within and without us. Are you feeling dull at the office on a Monday? It may not just be as a result of the usual `Monday Blues`, it may be also emanating from what you chose to wear.
The relevance of colour therapy in our daily activities
The right blend of colours may have you blossoming with creativity and positive energy even on your worst days of the week. This is why colour therapy is of utmost importance in this day and age. It is imperative that you send the right energy vibrations in your day-to-day interactions. Your choice of colours may affect your energy and that of your interviewers during a job interview, the outcome of a first date or the success of a sales pitch. Colours invoke emotions and perception. This is why it is important for us to be colour-conscious, no matter how ridiculous we may find the idea.
Interestingly, some people who happen to be colour-conscious will wear certain colours deliberately, to reflect their moods and emotional state. For instance, a recently bereaved widow may tend to wear black outfits to signify loss and the fact that they are in moaning. CEOs and people in positions of power also tend to favour black suits because they exude power and authority.
White is mostly the colour of choice for brides during a wedding because it signifies purity, `innocence`, and new beginnings which is the perfect mood to set in a wedding. Even the dinner setting will have a lot of white and a touch of red, to signify love and new beginnings. Red is usually the preferred colour of clothing on Valentine’s Day, because it represents love. These are all examples of situations and occasions in which people will deliberately wear certain colours as a reflection of their mood and emotional state.
The problem usually comes when executing colour therapy in our day-to-day lives. It might be easy to wear certain colours because we are attending important occasions, where it is customary to wear specific colours or risk sticking out like a sore thumb. However, choosing the colours to wear during `occasion-less` days such as our regular 8 - 5 jobs is where most of us get it wrong. We tend to downplay the importance of what we wear during such days, not knowing that it affects our productivity and general sense of happiness.

- Make you attractive and pleasant or repellent
- Impact your performance
- Affect your energy
- Affect your level of alertness and concentration
The next time you get an invite to an All White party or a Black Tie Affair, it ought to cross your mind that the organizers are trying to set a certain mood and atmosphere at the event. It is not coincidental that they decided to make it mandatory for revellers to wear the colours. This is what colour therapy is all about.
